The quiet takeover of the ad account Sometime in the last year, your ad account started making its own decisions. Meta's Andromeda system now decides who sees your ad based on the creative itself, not the audience boxes you tick. Google's AI campaigns write headlines, pick placements and set bids. The newest format goes further: agentic ads where the platform's assistant talks to your prospect inside the ad, answers their questions from your website, and hands you a pre-filled lead.
The pitch from the platforms is simple. Give us your budget, your product feed and your pixel, and we will find the customers. And the uncomfortable truth for anyone selling media management the old way: on pure delivery mechanics, the machine is now better. It tests more combinations in an afternoon than a buyer can in a quarter.
So should you hand over the keys? Some of them. Not all. Here is the honest split.
What the AI genuinely does better **Delivery and bidding.** Deciding who sees which ad, at what hour, at what bid. The audience-targeting craft that agencies charged retainers for through the 2010s is mostly gone. Broad targeting plus a strong signal now beats a hand-built interest stack on most accounts, and fighting that is paying for nostalgia.
Budget allocation across placements. Feed versus Reels versus stories versus search partners: let the system move the money. Manual placement splits are almost always worse.
Volume testing. Generating dozens of creative variants for the machine to sort is exactly the work AI formats exist for.
What still needs a human, and probably always will **The signal the machine learns from.** AI delivery is only as good as the conversion data you feed it. If your Conversions API is not set up, if your events are misfiring, if your reported numbers still read like the old attribution windows, the machine optimises toward the wrong thing at scale. Since Meta retired its longer attribution windows in January 2026, we have watched accounts panic-cut budgets over what was actually a reporting change, not a performance change. Clean signal is the new media buying.
The creative the machine distributes. Andromeda made creative the targeting. The system reads what your ad is about and finds people who respond to it, which means the strategy now lives inside the asset: the hook, the angle, the proof, the offer. Machine-generated creative converges on the category average. The category average is what everyone else is running. The brands winning in 2026 use AI for volume and variants, and humans for the angle the variant explores.
The judgement layer. The platform's AI optimises for the platform's outcome: spend delivered, conversions attributed. It does not know your margin, your stock position, your brand line, or that the "conversion" it found is a customer type you lose money serving. Someone accountable to your P&L has to read the machine's homework, run the incrementality checks, and overrule it when the numbers are technically right and commercially wrong.
The test we use before automating anything One question: if this goes wrong for two weeks unnoticed, what does it cost? Placement allocation drifting for two weeks costs little; automate it. Creative direction drifting for two weeks quietly repositions your brand; keep a human on it. Signal setup going wrong for two weeks poisons every optimisation downstream; that is not where you save money.
What to do with your account this quarter - Turn on the platform AI for delivery: broad targeting, automated placements, AI bidding. Resisting this is the expensive kind of pride. - Get your Conversions API live and deduplicated before you trust any AI optimisation. This is the single highest-leverage technical fix in paid right now. - Feed the machine human angles: brief real creative in batches, let AI cut the variants, kill the losers weekly. - Validate with incrementality or lift tests, not the platform's own scorecard. The machine grading its own homework is not measurement. - Keep one human owner per account whose job is judgement, not button-pushing.
That last split, machine for delivery and humans for signal, creative and judgement, is exactly how we run paid at Big Bang Story. If your account has quietly become a black box that spends money and reports green numbers you no longer quite believe, that is a solvable problem, and solving it is free to start: the audit costs nothing but a look.
